Becoming an Approved Driving Instructor is one of the most flexible, fulfilling careers you can choose. Whether you’re completely new to instructing or looking to get your standards check done, we offer structured, expert-led training every step of the way.
Course Criteria
Before you begin your ADI training, you’ll need to meet the following requirements:
- Hold a full UK driving licence (or EU equivalent) for a minimum of 3 years
- Be at least 21 years of age
- Have no more than 6 penalty points on your licence (no DD, DR or IN endorsements)
- Pass an enhanced DV check (Disclosure and Barring Service)
- Be a fit and proper person as determined by the DVSA
Part 1
ADI Theory & Hazard Perception Test
The knowledge foundation every instructor needs.
What Is It?
A computer-based DVSA exam covering driving theory, road safety, and instructional knowledge — plus a hazard perception test using video clips.
What Are the Pass Marks?
Theory: 85 out of 100
Hazard Perception: 57 out of 75

Part 2
ADI Driving Ability Test
Demonstrate the high standard of driving expected of a professional instructor.
What Is It?
An advanced in-car driving test assessed by a DVSA examiner. Far more demanding than a standard test, it covers a wide range of road types and conditions across Manchester.
What Are They Looking For?
Expert car control, impeccable observation, full knowledge of the Highway Code, and the ability to follow sat-nav directions independently – all without prompting.

Part 3
ADI Instructional Ability Test
The final step: prove you can teach as well as drive.
What Is It?
A 60-minute in-car test where a DVSA examiner acts as your pupil. You’ll be assessed on your ability to plan and deliver structured, safe, and effective driving lessons.
What Are They Looking For?
Strong communication, adaptive teaching, effective risk management, and the ability to help your pupil make real progress — all assessed against the National Standard for Driver and Rider Training.

Standards Check
Completed Every 4 Years
Keep your ADI badge and continue raising your standards.
What Is It?
A mandatory DVSA assessment every four years to maintain your ADI registration. Scored out of 51 – you’ll need at least 31 to retain your badge.
What Are They Assessing?
Three core areas: lesson planning, risk management, and teaching and learning strategies.
